The image above might be one of my all-time favorites. A mom meeting her baby for the first time, surrounded by people who believe in her and who are in total awe of her strength. Her expression, the realization of just how strong she is, and that this little precious baby is hers; it gets me in the best way.
I met Kelley for the first time in triage at George Washington Hospital Center. We had been connected by the fabulous GW Midwives and while we were supposed to meet a few days before, as the winter of 2016 would have it, the “stomach flu” kept us separated. It turned out that the stomach flu was actually sweet Daniel John making his appearance. There were so many amazing things about this day. The fact that I could be openly welcomed into such a sacred space was a testament to Kelley’s personality and her amazing amazing strength. She trusted all of us who were present, but even more she herself, her body and her baby. It was empowering for all of us that witnessed it.
Kelley, you are one amazing woman and I am so thankful we were connected. You are a reminder of how strong we all really can be. Welcome to the world sweet Daniel John and welcome to motherhood Kelley.
Be sure to check out Daniel John’s full birth-day video.
Thank you to wonderful Midwife Hannah MacIntyre and the L&D nurses of GW who believe in birth and more importantly believe in mothers.
